D-Day A letter from Heidi about her Uncle (my Father)
Today is the anniversary of the Landing at Normandy.
At least 50 years ago I went there with a Cuban friend from Catholic U.
It turned out that she was related to the Schreiner family.
It was a very moving experience.
You can just feel the history along the very narrow beach.
At the top of the cliffs are cemeteries.
Hundreds and hundreds of graves: French, American, British and even a German section.
It was not at all commercial.
The only thing I was able to acquire was a canteen.
It was old and in bad condition.
I brought it back to Uncle Edwin.
He was quite moved.
He said:
"I never thought you were listening".
I felt very bad that he said that.
As a medic he had had the work
of patching up the dying , the dead and the badly wounded.
I will always think of Edwin on D Day.
